Der gesamte Samstag drehte sich für mich um College Football. Ken & Becky sind große Fans der Mannschaft von Texas A&M. Also haben sie mir ein Ticket und ein Shirt besorgt und mich in die Besonderheiten ihres Collegeteams eingeführt. Texas A&M ist extrem traditionell und militärisch, also das komplette Gegenteil von meiner Sichtweise. Somit wurde der Tag so ne Art Hardcore-Kulturschock. Zum Glück gings am Ende immer noch um Football und das Spiel selbst war gar nicht so schlecht.
Los ging’s im Longhorn mit dem brüchtigten Texas Chicken Fried Steak. Ich hab inzwischen meine Lektion gelernt und direkt das kleine bestellt. Hier sind auch zahlreiche Verwandte von Ken zu uns gestoßen. Alles Harccore-Texas-A&M-Fans und somit eher konservativ am Start.
Dann ging’s zum Campus. Die Studenten von Texas A&M nennen sich Aggies.
Ein Footballspiel startet mit dem Team Spirit March. Bei dem die Spieler, angeführt von der Kapelle von den Quatieren ins Stadion ziehen und dabei von den Fans schon mal eingestimmt werden.
Bei Texas A&M gibt es keine Cheerleader sondern Yellleader (s.o.), die die Fans und insbesondere die Studenten beim anfeuern koordinieren.
Dann marschieren die ganzen Kadetten in Reih und Glied ins Stadion.
Texas A&M ist für seine 12th-Man-Tradition bekannt. Bei jedem Spiel sind ca. 30 – 40000 Studenten im Stadion. Während ihr Team in der Defense ist halten sie durchgehend einen unglaublichen Lärmpegel aufrecht, um das gegnerische Team aus der Konzentration zu bringen.
Unten ist die Kapelle der gegnerischen Mannschaft Oklahoma zu sehen.
Das ist die Militärkapelle von Texas A&M.
Bei dem Spiel waren 86 000 Zuschauer im Stadion.
Insgesamt eine ungemein interessante Erfahrung, auch wenn Texas am Ende mit einem Punkt verloren hat.

We ate together, we laughed a lot. The spirit of this meeting was captured for me personally in a relationship of early morning encounters with Becky Shuman – she gets up at 4:15 am every morning to go to work and was kind enough to listen to my babbling at this hour and even respond decently. I am the kind of person who gets up early in the morning in order to write or think or just phone my wife. Becky cared and build a relationship with a german dude in his early morning state – what a gift! Then of course Wellspring, SafeSpace, Kubik and @home all of them are small communities, Solomons Porch would be the biggest among them. But gathered were people of relationships, we danced texas twostep, we went to football games (Johannes in german and Mark Berry in english) and finaly, yes, we did talk about a way of learning from each other, globally, interrelated, but independend communities. I found people over there who want to stay true to the calling that has been given to them. Including thinking small in a big, big country and yet be aware of the fact, that many people might be influenced by what they talk, decide or do. What a dream it could be to build up something where we can learn from each other. What a gift I have been given to be among those people. I fanybody asks now: What have you been doing over there? “Building relationships with other people”, I will respond, “thinking small, but being really big about learning from my family all across the globe.” […]
