Filtrat 09/15 – The Haunted AI

Unfortunately, the popular conception of A.I., at least as depicted in countless movies, games and books, still seems to assume that humanlike characteristics (anger, jealousy, confusion, avarice, pride, desire, not to mention cold alienation) are the most important ones to be on the lookout for. This anthropocentric fallacy may contradict the implications of contemporary A.I. research, but it is still a prism through which much of our culture views an encounter with advanced synthetic cognition.

One of the great struggles in chaos magick, relevant to our discussion here, is between the ego that comes from power, the will required to perform power, and the compassion needed to shape power humanely.

When Jony Ive attempted to decide which screen sizes to offer with the iPhone 6, part of the process included designers carrying around prototypes of the phones in their pockets as they went about their normal lives. Thus, they willed the phones into a place of pastness where they could see them as objects that existed in the world, invoking them from a world where they did not yet exist. The capitalist structure of the design team and Apple’s dedication to a specific power relationship with its consumers meant this wall of isolation had to be absolute, preserving the intent of the team.

3.

Cognition does not equal computation. You do not even want cognition to equal computation. You are getting in the way of making computation do things that are of genuine interest.

Der passende Soundtrack für Haunted Machines: The Ghost in the MP3

„moDernisT“ was created by salvaging the sounds and images lost to compression via the MP3 and MP4 codecs. The audio is comprised of lost mp3 compression material from the song „Tom’s Diner“ famously used as one of the main controls in the listening tests to develop the MP3 encoding algorithm.

Tobias Revell laß zur Einleitung der Haunted-Machines-Session dieses Zitat von Edgar Allan Poe über Maetzel’s Chess Player

Perhaps no exhibition of the kind has ever elicited so general attention as the Chess-Player of Maelzel. Wherever seen it has been an object of intense curiosity, to all persons who think. Yet the question of its modus operandi is still undetermined. Nothing has been written on this topic which can be considered as decisive — and accordingly we find every where men of mechanical genius, of great general acuteness, and discriminative understanding, who make no scruple in pronouncing the Automaton a pure machine, unconnected with human agency in its movements, and consequently, beyond all comparison, the most astonishing of the inventions of mankind.

8.

The City is here to haunt us.

9.
